【Course Objectives】

The goal of this course is to be able to annotate The Tale of Genji. In more detail, students will 1) transcribe the letters in old manuscripts into contemporary letters in general usage, 2) based on the transcribed text, create a text that is easy to read for contemporary people despite its being an ancient classic, 3) create a modern language translation which makes the context easy to comprehend while being based on a word-for-word translation, 4) give more accurate explanations about phrases in the text that are difficult to understand while referring to dictionaries, encyclopedias, and existing annotated versions of the Tale, 5) set a problem for deeper research from the part of the text assigned to you and prepare a commentary on it while referring to existing research papers. The aim of this course is to enable students to achieve the above tasks.
