【Course Objectives】

The course will take up representative chapters of Otogi zoshi, a work that has been read since the Middle Ages. Students will carefully read and interpret the narrative world of the work while treasuring each expression, and will gain understanding of the characteristics of the work.

【Course Contents】

The course will first provide an outline of Otogi zoshi and explain how the seminar will proceed. Following this, seminar leaders will be determined, and presentations and question and answer sessions will take place. Using annotations and prior research as references, seminar leaders will analyze, investigate, and make presentations on characteristics of expression, the structure of the story, the differences among books, the relation between the body of text and book illustrations, the environment that gave birth to the tale, and influences on later generations, from the respective viewpoints of each. Through careful reading by all participants, the course aims to unearth the many attractions of the story.
