【Course Objectives】

Students learn about the characteristics of Heian literature and culture by carefully reading several scenes from "Izumi Shikibu Diary", a work representative of the Heian period. Students learn how to read classical literature and develop the ability to present the results of their research.

【Course Contents】

The class will engage in careful reading "Izumi Shikibu Diary", comparing and considering readings of representative modern-day annotations. The first session will present an outline of "Izumi Shikibu Diary", then explain how the seminar will proceed. Following that, class leaders will be decided, and the class will proceed through presentations and questions and answers. Making reference to annotations and prior research, the presentation leaders will consider not only the parts of the text under their charge but also how those parts are positioned within the work. They will raise problem areas in the interpretation of the scenes they take up, and will report on how to read the scenes. Analysis and investigation will adopt multifaceted standpoints, including relationships with other texts and with history. Through careful reading by all of the participants, the class will approach the world of expression in "Izumi Shikibu Diary".
