【Course Objectives】

The goal of this course is to provide students with the perspective necessary to construct an overview of the history of the Japanese language and to be able to relativize various overviews of the history of the Japanese language. It will also help students to deepen their understanding of the basic points to be learned by examining how university overview courses are organized.

【Course Contents】

Through the organization of a total of 14 overview lectures on the history of the Japanese language, such as those in the separately offered "Introduction to Japanese Linguistics 2," we will organize the necessary information for beginning students from among the numerous information available, and update the information for those common theories that do not correspond to the latest scholarly discussions. Basically, we will examine the thematic histories of "phonological history," "history of letters," "history of grammar," and so on, respectively, but we will also consider how to handle general history and the history of Japanese linguistics.
Specifically, we will comprehensively collect and organize a variety of general descriptions, focusing on overview documents with titles such as "History of the Japanese Language" revise and update the information, and consider what matters should be summarized and how for beginning students in the allotted time (100 minutes per session x 14 sessions). In doing so, we will consider how to summarize the information for beginners in the allotted time (14 sessions of 100 minutes each). We will also discuss and devise examples, illustrations, charts, and other materials.
Depending on the number of students, we will start by discussing the breakdown of the 14 sessions, using the lecture plan for "Introduction to Japanese Linguistics 2" as a starting point, and then decide on the topics to be covered. If there is enough time, students and faculty may actually conduct a mock class.

It is preferable that students have already taken a course on the history of the Japanese language or "Introduction to Japanese Linguistics," but it is sufficient if they have read at least one overview book on the history of the Japanese language before taking the course.
