【Course Objectives】

The course will investigate citations of prior literature in Genji Monogatari, to understand the tale’s presence within the flow of literary history.

【Course Contents】

Genji Monogatari is related to prior literary works such as waka, Chinese poetry, and tales, through its citations of these. Guided by the cited representations, readers gain appreciation of the unique world of Genji Monogatari, superimposing the world of the prior literary works that lie behind it, feeling the common points and differences among these, and reading the meanings that emerge.
The course will shed light on the landscape of literary history made visible in retrospect from Genji Monogatari, by exploring the nature of the citations of prior literature in the tale.
