【Course Objectives】

【1】Be able to explain the different expression styles of "yatsushi" and "mitate" in the Edo period, as well as the differences between the two.【2】Be able to appropriately explain the literary and artistic works of the Edo period, which had a great influence overseas, from the perspective of "yatsushi" and "mitate".

【Course Contents】

【Theme】Deciphering the expression styles of the Edo period from "Yatsushi" and "Mitate".【Overview】In the Edo period, "mitate" and "yatsushi" were forms of expression that were pervasive in every corner of society. "Mitate" is to compare one thing to another, and "Yatsushi" is to express a classic in a modern and familiar way. In this class, we will look at the expressive techniques "Yatsushi" and "Mitate" in practice while primarily reading prose works from the early to mid-Edo period. However, given the current situation that literary works from the Edo period are not necessarily familiar to students, we would like to prioritize becoming familiar with the works first.
