【Course Objectives】

The goal of this course is to provide an overview of the history of dictionaries in Japan, as well as a particularly in-depth understanding of some important dictionaries.

【Course Contents】

In this class, we will look at the history of the Japanese language through a variety of themes. This year, we will outline the history of dictionaries in Japan through the ages.
In Japan, many dictionaries have been produced over the years. The first half of the course will introduce how dictionaries were created, their social background, how they were used, and their specific contents through as many dictionaries as possible. In the second half, we will focus mainly on Japanese and archaic dictionaries from the early modern period and discuss how they have influenced the modern period and beyond. The drama of people compiling dictionaries has attracted much attention even today, but there have also been many human dramas in history surrounding dictionaries, which we will also share with you as much as possible.
We will ask students to actually look at the dictionaries we have introduced and their surrounding dictionaries by using the library and online resources. Dictionaries are only useful for practical use, so we may ask you to actually pull out some of the dictionaries.
