【Course Objectives】

The goal of this course is to be able to understand and explain Lady Murasaki’s works. At the same time, the goal of this course is also for students to acquire a way of learning that helps them to know what they need to grasp in order to understand classical works of Japanese literature.

【Course Contents】

Lecture on The Diary of Lady Murasaki, The Collection of Lady Murasaki’s Poetry, and The Tale of Genji. I will firstly explain the contents of The Diary of Lady Murasaki which became the materials for the writing of The Tale of Genji. I will then give a bibliographical and philological explanation of the existing manuscript of The Diary of Lady Murasaki. In particular, I will explain the process and the reasons why the Kurokawa version of the “Murasaki Diary” has been recognized as the best version of the diary. Following that, I will explain the structure of The Diary of Lady Murasaki with its unique lack of balance among the different parts. I will then lecture on the contents and expressions of important parts of The Diary of Lady Murasaki. I will then take up The Collection of Lady Murasaki’s Poetry. I will explain that this Collection, while basically arranging the waka in chronological order, is also partially compiled in a very clever way that creates groups of waka according to the subject matter. I will then give a concrete and detailed commentary of several of the waka. I will then take up The Tale of Genji. Firstly, the characteristics of The Tale of Genji as thought of by the instructor will be discussed. Following that, I will give an explanation of the relationship of The Tale of Genji with prior literary works. Thirdly, I will explain the relationship between The Tale of Genji and history.
