【Course Objectives】

The purposes of this course are to (1) obtain basic knowledge and understand the worldview of "Otogi-Zōshi," a short story group created sometime from the 14th to the 17th century; (2) deepen understanding of picture scrolls and picture books.

【Course Contents】

"Otogi-Zōshi" is a collective term for more than 400 short stories from the Middle Ages to the early modern era. Many of them are picture scrolls and picture books. This course introduces these stories for each category. Then, the contents of each work and the points to note are explained. Each work is interpreted from various perspectives, such as characters and stage locations, motifs and developments of the story, features of expression, and background of the production, in order to clarify the world view of "Otogi-Zōshi."
