① Through the stories, deepen your understanding of Shintoism and Buddhism, and learn about the changes
in the Japanese view of life and death.
②Students will appreciate various pictorial historical materials related to folk tales, learn how to
analyze subjects from sometimes adjacent academic fields, and learn how to consider them from a
broader perspective.
Many gods and Buddhas appear in Japanese folk tales. How have God and Buddha been understood in our lives? Let's read episodes about gods and Buddha selected from myths and religious stories such as the auspicious origins of temples and shrines, and think about Japan's religious world. In this lecture, we will use folk tales to deepen our understanding of the world of gods and Buddha, and how our unconscious images of hell and paradise have changed over time.

②説話と関係する様々な絵画史料を鑑賞し、時に近接する学問領域から対象を分析する方法を学び、

日本の説話には、数多くの神仏が登場します。人々の暮らしの中において、神仏はどのような存在として理解されてきたのでしょうか。神話や寺社縁起を含む、宗教説話から選んだ神仏のエピソードを読みながら、神仏が同居する、不思議な日本の宗教世界について考えてみましょう。本講義では、説話を通して神仏の世界、さらに私たちが無意識のうちにイメージしている地獄と極楽がどのようにイメージされてきたかについて理解を深めます。
