【Course Objectives】

(1) To understand the unique position of the early modern period in the history of waka poetry.
(2) To understand various aspects of literary attitudes toward poetry.
(3) To understand the connection between Chinese studies and Kokugaku in the context of the history of literature and the history of ideas.

【Course Contents】

We will examine the position of waka poetry in the early modern period, not only from the standpoint of waka poetry, but also from the broader perspective of the history of waka poetry and the history of ideas.

We will take up the literary theories of the Zhu Xi school as the premise for the history of waka poetry in the early modern period, and then look at the poetic theories of the Kogi school (Ito Jinsai and Ito Togai) and the Kobunji school (Ogyu Sorai, Dazai Shundai and Hattori Nankaku) that emerged as criticism of Zhu Xi school's theories, particularly in relation to their ideologies.

Following the flow of such Chinese studies, we will grasp the development of waka poetry history in the early modern period. In particular, we will examine the relationship between poetry theory and poetry composition in accordance with the respective positions that emphasize Manyoshu(Kamono Mabuchi), Kokinshu(Kagawa Kageki), and Shin-Kokinshu(Motoori Norinaga).
