【Course Objectives】

The aim of this course is to acquire knowledge of various speech controls, such as Home Ministry censorship, GHQ/SCAP censorship, and so-called literary trials, and to examine the relationship between these controls and literature.
The goal is for students to be able to think about literature from multiple perspectives.

【Course Contents】

In this course, we will learn about and deepen our understanding of the relationship between literature and the various forms of speech control (censorship) that were a given condition for the establishment of modern and contemporary Japanese literature and the production of various texts, including literature.
In particular, we will pay attention to the relationship between the linguistic expression and publishing activities of literary texts and the social conditions at the time of writing and publication, and we will read, identify, and make sense of the intentions of writers, publishers, and censors.
In order to gain a concrete understanding of the nature of literature, which is not unrelated to society and history, we will revisit the fact that there was a situation in which literary works had to pass through censorship in order to be exposed to the public.
The lecture will roughly cover four topics in chronological order.
1. Censorship of the Ministry of Home Affairs and Literature
2. Wartime Speech Control and Literature
3. GHQ/SCAP censorship and literature
4. Postwar speech control (corresponding situation) and literature
