【Course Objectives】

To understand the development of classical studies in early modern Japan and be able to describe basic matters based on appropriate materials.
To be able to discuss the relationship between literature of the early modern period and the trends of the time, based on one’s own awareness of the issues.

【Course Contents】

In early modern Japan, the flourishing of publishing culture led to a dramatic expansion of people who not only read classics but also actively studied them and applied their knowledge in various practices, compared to the medieval period. Their activities are now positioned as pioneering presences in various fields of modern humanities such as literature, history, philosophy, religion, and art. Conversely, this intellectual activity in early modern Japan was diverse and varied, different from the specialized academic system of today. Intellectuals of the early modern period collected books and materials related to ancient Japan, not only studying them but also attempting various practices using their knowledge. They had various connections among like-minded people, and some of them had intellectual ambitions and aimed to rise in status through their knowledge. We will tentatively call this intellectual activity that brought various ripples to society at that time ‘Wagaku’. In this course, we will teach about how such activities of early modern Wagaku were carried out by what kind of people, what kind of thought currents were in the background, and how it developed with what kind of spread.
