【Course Objectives】

The goals of this course are to
・obtain knowledge of how to read a text analytically,
・improve one’s academic communication skills through presentations and discussions,
・learn how to use the library and other university facilities for study,
・express one's own reflections in the form of written papers.

【Course Contents】

This course deals with methods of textual analysis. First, using modern Japanese novels as material, various methods of analysis and examples of their application will be discussed. Then, we will broaden the scope of texts to include thought and criticism, and examine how we can understand and critique the debates in such texts.
After the introductory sessions, which are common to all university studies, the course will proceed with presentations by the reporters and classroom discussions in response to the presentations. Finally, students will submit a report of approximately 4,000 words on the results of their own textual analysis.
