Text Code AU117

【Course Objectives】

By thoroughly reading the text we will acquire knowledge of modern Japanese history that isn’t taught at high school. We will develop the ability to accurately read the text, produce a clear report and deliver a logical argument. Concurrently, we will develop the know-how needed for writing a report/academic paper.

【Course Contents】

We will read Uwasa no enkinho (Literal translation: A perspective on rumors) by Iwao Matsuyama, and Genshi suru kindai kukan: Meishin, byoki, zashikiro, aruiwa rekishi no kioku (Literal translation: Visions of modern spaces: superstitions, illnesses, prison cells (floored with tatami mats), or memories of history) by Kunimitsu Kawamura. Appointed students will produce and deliver a report, then carry out a question and answer session/debate based on the report.
Reference materials will be handed out and instruction provided on how to write a report.
