【Course Objectives】

The goal of this course is to learn the basic concepts of Western philosophy and understand what kind of problems philosophy deals with. And we will focus on the Enlightenment thought and understand the flow of the history of philosophy. Through this course, students will be able to find philosophical problems hidden in everyday life and examine them on their own.

【Course Contents】

Read Voltaire’s work “Treatise on Tolerance” carefully and exchange opinions on the significance and possibility of tolerance. In this work, Voltaire challenges the wrongful conviction case involving Jean Calas, a Protestant. This wrongful conviction case is about Calas being arrested on suspicion of killing his own son and being executed despite pleading his innocence. Voltaire, faced with this case involving discrimination and prejudice against Protestants by Catholics, appealed to public opinion from a position of trusting reason and worked hard to restore Calas’ honor. In reading this work, we would like to consider "tolerance," the attitude of tolerating the position of others who think differently and believe in different religions. This is because discrimination and exclusion of others based on prejudice and superstition continues to this day in many different situations. As for the way of conducting the class, we would like to have two reporters explain the summary of the text every time. We would like to conduct the class in a way that leads to the students’ learning.
