【Course Objectives】

Using the textual readings of Columbus and other early conquistadors of the Americas as a paradigmatic example, we trace the genealogy of the representations of the “Other" in the non-Western world that the Western world had constructed. Their understanding of the New World was deeply immersed in the image of the other world prevailing in the contemporaneous European world. We will explore how the representations of " Paradise on Earth," mentioned in the Bible, myths, and pseudographs and firmly believed to exist, and of " Utopia," constructed as an inversion of the Western self-image, were related to the representations of the non-Western world, including the Americas. This lecture will also examine how the series of representations of the Other relate to our contemporary perception of the world.

【Course Contents】

From ancient Greece to modern days, a variety of texts (including visual as well as written media) have been produced, consumed, circulated and accumulated in the process of military expeditions, trade, missionary activities, conquests, and colonization. In this lecture, we will examine these texts and explore how the figures that make up the texts and the cultural devices that surround them have functioned in the construction of historical imaginaries. The quiz (small questions) given in each class will be evaluated. The paper must be accompanied by bibliography and notes.
