【Course Objectives】

This course aims to teach the actualities of researching paleolithic cave art, so that students can consider philosophical and anthropological questions: "What is a human being? Why did human beings survive until now?"

【Course Contents】

Some groups of homo sapiens departed from Africa to Eurasia and then migrated all over the world. Homo sapiens who went to the West developed naturalistic art, that is, Upper Palaeolithic Art in Europe. The art on durable rock still remains even after tens of thousands of years. Cave art on immobile rock in France and Spain is well known: Lascaux, Chauvet, Altamira, and so on. Venus figurines, for example, the Venus of Willendorf in Austria, are transportable, so we call such objects made of small stones, bones, and ivories "mobile art." In this course, studies of cave art, mobile art, and accessories are presented. Students consider Paleolithic art from many views: technique, dating, theme, interpretation, society, anthropology, and so on.
