【Course Objectives】

In today's world where social and environmental issues are becoming increasingly serious, companies are being asked to leverage their business power to actively participate in solving social and environmental issues. With the spread of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and ESG investment that considers the environment and society as investment criteria, the movement of companies to solve social and environmental problems through their core business is rapidly expanding.
In this class, we aim to acquire the following ways of thinking by learning how to think about the interaction between business and social and environmental issues in the future.
・How to think about the impact that changes in society and the environment will have on business in the coming era
・Social business and sustainability business concepts that promote the resolution of social and environmental issues through business
・Management and governance of sustainability leader companies
・How to think about sustainability required of future business people

In addition, in class, we aim to acquire the following techniques through case analysis, group work, and final assignments.
・Methods for analyzing cases of social business and sustainability business
・How to proceed with discussions to deepen your own ideas by interacting with people with diverse ways of thinking
・Methods for designing sustainability businesses required in 2030

【Course Contents】

This course covers “social business,” and “sustainability and business” in order to help students understand what is needed from businesses in the face of social and environmental issues in the world, and the synergistic effect that is created between society and business.

1. Introduction: The interrelatedness of global environmental/social sustainability and business sustainability, and the changes that have been promoting SDGs and ESG investment will be introduced, and the points of study in this course will be set forth.
2. Social businesses: Here, discussions will be held on the reasons why social businesses are necessary, the characteristics of businesses, ways to influence society, and the state of the relationship between existing businesses and the government.
3. Sustainability and business: Students will be made to consider how corporations are required to confront environmental issues, as well as issues pertaining to energy, poverty, welfare, and human rights, using domestic and international case studies as a basis.
4. Design a new sustainable brand: Students will consider a new Sustainability-centric business.

Each class will include a discussion, group work, and require a lot of homework, and students' proactive participation is expected.
