【Course Objectives】

While SMEs(Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) are economically vulnerable and receive support, they are also expected to be a source of dynamism for the Japanese economy.
In this lecture, we will focus not only on the problems that SMEs face, but also on their expected roles, and capture the state of SMEs from multiple perspectives.
Through systematic consideration, students deepen their understanding of the essence of the subject and aim to acquire academic ability.

【Course Contents】

Approximately 70% of the 47 million people employed in Japan work for SMEs. When limited to rural areas alone, the percentage exceeds 80%.
The overwhelming majority of people choose to work at SMEs, but in our daily lives, we only see and hear the names of large companies. Opportunities for students to learn about the true state of SMEs are surprisingly rare.
In this lecture, we will first understand the weight of SMEs as economic entities.
Then, we carefully discuss issues surrounding SMEs, such as what kind of existence SMEs are, what role SMEs play, and what are the characteristics and issues seen in SMEs compared to large companies.
At that time, we will also touch on the symbolic concepts that represent SMEs, such as subcontractors, regional SMEs, venture companies, and niche tops.
Furthermore, since diversity is a major characteristic of SMEs, we will consider it while citing a wealth of actual examples and applying theories.
