【Course Objectives】

This course is a practical introduction to stockmarkets for investors. The stockmarkets of Singapore and Australia are introduced. Singapore in particular is a good starting point because it is the leading financial center in the Asia-Pacific, and ranked third globally in 2023 behind only New York and London, according to the Global Financial Center Index (https://www.visualcapitalist.com/top-global-financial-centers-in-2023/).

【Course Contents】

The first part of the course covers the trading and settlement of stocks, and trading offences such as insider trading and market manipulation.
The second part covers company action, such as initial public offerings, secondary offerings, earnings announcements and takeovers.
The third part covers investor disclosure protection and corporate governance.
The class is organized as a lecture in the first half, with a workshop in the second half, where students conduct group research and present the equivalent characteristics of their home stock market.
After the class, students should have a broad understanding of stockmarkets, not only of Australia and Singapore, but also that of the home countries of the enrolled students, which in Spring 2023, were the US, Japan, China, France, Spain, Mexico and Brazil.
