【Course Objectives】

This course intends to help students acquire two essential skills for future careers: English and basic ideas of economics. This introductory course aims at giving students opportunities to get more familiar with economic articles including short blogs and educational materials for the general public, without mathematical formula, issued by the International Monetary Fund and the Bank of England. The course also includes various exercises including those conducted before and after lectures to better understand the basic ideas of economics. Economic ideas are also explained in Japanese. Active learning methods such as group discussions among students and conducting research on related topics are also deployed.

【Course Contents】

In this course, one article is covered by two consecutive lectures. The first lecture is devoted to better grasp of economic ideas in the article. The second lecture aims at deepening understanding of economic ideas gained in the first lecture through various exercises including fact-finding exercises on Japan's economy and group discussions among students. Students are expected to conduct preparatory and review works through Canvas LMS before and after each lecture.
