This course intends to help students acquire two essential skills for future careers: English and basic ideas of economics. This intermediate course covers "Can't We Just Print More Money," a best seller written by the Bank of England economists to enhance the general public's understandings of basic economics ideas without mathematical formula. It also covers current topics such as climate change and digital money. In the lectures, economics ideas are explained in Japanese, while analyses and discussions on the texts are given in English. If you continue to take the fall course, you can read through the whole book, but you can take only take the spring course as each chapter of the book addresses a separate topic. Active learning methods such as group discussions among students and conducting research on related topics are also deployed.
The course puts more emphasis on the intuitive grasp of messages and ideas in the book rather than giving detailed interpretations of the texts. Students are expected to conduct preparatory works through LMS. In the lecture, comments are given to the preparatory works and students make presentations after having a group discussion on the topic. The theories and ideas of economics are explained in Japanese. Students are asked to conduct review exercises after each lecture. Students may wish to refer to a Japanese translated version of the book, where appropriate.

学生の将来のキャリア形成に役立つ「英語」と「経済学的な考え方」という2つのスキルを同時に身につけることを目指す。中級のこの講義では、イングランド銀行のエコノミストが一般向けに、一切の数式なしで、平易な英語で経済を解説し、ベストセラーになった「Can't We Just Print More Money?」（2022）を丁寧に読み進めながら、身近な事例を通して経済学の基本的な考え方や気候変動問題やデジタル通貨など最新の経済トピックの見方を身につける。経済学の解説は日本語で行う。秋学期開講の「2」と通して受講すれば1冊を読み通すことができるが、各章は独立しているので春学期のみ受講することもできる。テキストの理解だけでなく、学生間のディスカッションや事例サーベイなどアクティブ・ラーニングも併用する。

講義ではテキストの細部の解釈より経済学の考え方を直感的に理解することに重きを置く。予習としてテキストの理解を試す課題に取り組むことを求める。講義では学生が取り組んだ予習課題への回答にコメントしたり、トピックに関して学生間でディスカッションしたりする。関連する経済学の理論や考え方は日本語で解説する。講義後も講義内容を復習する課題や理解を深める演習課題を出す。なお、邦訳「イングランド銀行公式 経済がよくわかる10章」（すばる舎、2023）も出ており、適宜参照するのは構わない。

ミクロ経済学、マクロ経済学の基礎科目を履修済であることが望ましいが必須ではない。講義ではもちろん、予習、復習でも理解を深めるための課題に取り組んでもらい、それが成績評価でも重視されるため、積極的に取り組む姿勢が重要である。
講義中も各自がインターネット接続可能なノートPCもしくはタブレットを持参することが必須である。予習・復習の課題も授業支援システム（LMS）経由で提出を求める。
