To imperially and structurally assess the state of Japanese employment and consider the changes to contemporary society using labor as a hint.
The labor problem is an unavoidable theme in understanding the societal changes in contemporary Japan. For example, the key to solving the low birthrate problem is said to be having a good work/life balance for both male and female workers. The increase in non-regular workers and changes to the wage system are affecting the expansion of the income disparity and poverty. This seminar broadly addresses and discusses the problems related to labor and uses labor as a hint for considering the changes in contemporary society.
During the seminar students will read and discuss related literature and engage is frequent debates. In this way the students not only acquire knowledge, but strengthen their ability to think logically, conduct analysis, and communicate. In addition, to learn about “labor,” which is a human activity, it is important to not just read books but to also go onsite and talk to the people and other related parties. For this reason, guest speakers will be invited to class and actual conditions will be surveyed.
Further, twice a year (spring and fall semesters) students will participate in joint seminars with other universities and give research presentations. For the research presentations, groups will be formed of students from different class years and each group will conduct actual conditions surveys and statistical analysis. In conclusion, a single paper for the entire seminar will be prepared.
In this seminar, the students will be leading all of these activities. The students themselves will be in charge of set the research themes, making study and visit requests to companies, selecting guest speakers, etc. Cooperating with seminar companions and work hard together to jointly create something leads to a great sense of achievement and confidence. The lecturer looks forward to ambitious students participating in this seminar.

To imperially and structurally assess the state of Japanese employment and consider the changes to contemporary society using labor as a hint.
