【Course Objectives】

For students to acquire the ability to think for themselves about the problems and possibilities of small and medium size enterprises (venture businesses) and regional economic problems, form hypotheses about them, consider the real economy using their own logic by combining onsite information and theory, and to present those results.

【Course Contents】

To analyze small and medium size businesses, which have diverse and numerous characteristics, it is important to narrow down the targeted angles and analytical perspectives. For example, a framework needs to be set, such as the industry (automobile industry, etc.), business type (developmental venture, family business, etc.), and the area (Ota Ward in Tokyo, Sabae City in Fukui Prefecture, etc.). At the same time, for all of these there is existing research regarding the economic and business theory, the history of those fields, and their actual conditions and the government policies regarding them. During the seminar students will study these in good balance and learn and apply methods for systematizing knowledge from new and unique angles.
Students will be divided into teams that will set their theme, survey and read literature, hold discussions and workshops, and give presentations while also conducting fieldwork to obtain the onsite information they need (interviews with people from companies and government agencies), and then compile the results, which is the final objective of this seminar.
Each year, students will enter the Awards for Studies on Small Business that is held by the Shoko Research Institute. This is in principle, but several other options can also be considered, such as entering other paper contests and participating in various projects or contents, so the lecturer will discuss this with the students before any final decisions are made.
In addition to this, talks by guest speakers, debates with other universities (Keio University, etc.), training camps, and other activities are also planned.
4th year students will take turns leading the seminar and will write their graduation thesis. As a rule, guidance for the graduation theses will be given individually to students.
