【Course Objectives】

This is a research seminar in which students will become familiar with the basic literature on which economics was built while also looking at the history of economics and thinking about the contemporary issues faced by economics. The objective of this seminar is for students to not only learn about the economy from textbooks, but to think about the economy on their own, to identify problems facing the economy on their own, and to develop the ability to think about solutions for these.

【Course Contents】

This seminar will consist of two parts. In the first half, we will read the various basic literature that has shaped economics (Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, Thomas Robert Malthus's An Essay on Population, Walter Bagehot's Lombard Street, John Steuart Mill's On Liberty, John Maynard Keynes's General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money, etc.). In the spring semester of 2023, Hiroyuki Maeda's The Wall of Economics was used as the basic literature for the seminar. Furthermore, in the second half of the seminar, the seminar was divided into five groups, and group research and research presentations were conducted by each group. In 2024, the seminar activities will continue to focus on deepening and acquiring a understanding of economics through the reading of basic economic literature and developing the ability to identify and present original problems through student’s group research.
