【Course Objectives】

To be able to explain in concrete terms the impact of scientific knowledge and technological development on modern society. Understand the basic issues and background of scientific ethics in conducting scientific research, and be able to express student' own ideas about the ideal form of science in practical discussions. Understand the causes of misconduct and inappropriate conduct in scientific research, and be able to prevent them.

【Course Contents】

What kind of occupation is science? What is the role of professional scientists in society?
In this lecture, we will trace the history and examine the relationship between science, technology, and society up to the present, as well as the ethics required of science and scientists.
The lecture will cover issues related to experimentation and proof since modern science, what it means for scientists to leave their mark on history, the ethics of physicians since Hippocrates, the professionalization of science, how scientists have dealt with war and the state, the scientific community's response to advanced technology, environmental issues and science, and court cases and science. Because the role of science and technology in modern society is so significant, the course aims to help students understand and be able to discuss not only the results of scientific research, but also the social impact of misconduct and statements made by scientists. The goal is also to enable students to think about how they, as a citizen of society, should be involved in society based on their scientific knowledge.
