【Course Objectives】

This course aims to investigate a history of madness in modern Western societies, with special focus on historical, social and cultural transformations in discursive formations on madness. Through this investigation, we will explore the present of our anthropological imagination.

【Course Contents】

We will reexamine the work of Michel Foucault’s History of Madness in the Classical Age (1961/1972), with special focus on the relationships between including madness and excluding unreason by the Reason in modern Western societies, the figure of mental illness and the birth of the asylum, the anthropological cycle through madness and the truth of modern human being, conflicts of plural discourses / power-knowledge on the abnormal and the criminal, and the power-knowledge of modern psychiatry (including Freudian psychoanalyze and antipsychiatry), etc.
