【Course Objectives】

Students will study lives and residence in metropolis while analyzing facilities, cultures, and modern urban structures that support urban lives. Students will cultivate various perspectives to observe urban lives.

【Course Contents】

In urban spaces, characteristics, changes, and problems of modern society become concentrated and apparent. In addition, ideas of administrations, capitals, laborers, and residents cross path, causing both intended and unintended results in these spaces. However, as many people’s lives are urbanized, these historical dynamisms become obscured, were accepted and considered normal parts of lives.
In order to examine the dynamism and problems of such urban life, it is necessary not only to actually observe it, but also to consider various data, and to examine the perspectives from which urban research has studied urban life to date. There is a need to learn.
First, in order to understand recent urban life from multiple angles, we will examine various ``basic literature on urban sociology'' that we have casually touched upon. While using the text as a base, the students will also practice debating their own opinions regarding the urban devices and culture that they perceive.
Next, we will examine social changes such as the introduction of IT in daily life, the increasing number of unmarried people, the declining birthrate and aging population, as well as the various problems and limitations of the urban structure that have been accumulated, by providing an overview of career development in urban life. I would also like to examine the literature on urban facilities, spaces, and cultural devices from the perspective of whether they are alien to urban life or necessary. Since this is a very current issue, it is necessary to learn not only sociology, but also the concepts of urban space design in economics, public administration, and living space studies. I would like to deepen my understanding of urban life by being exposed to approaches to cities from as wide a range of fields as possible.
