【Course Objectives】

Students will read and investigate human values and various economic, social, and cultural aspects through sociological discussions, including comparisons between fast consumption and slow movement; significance of ethical and social consumptions; transformation of consuming fields caused by media development.

【Course Contents】

Consumer society condition is mirror that reflects people’s interests, cultural backgrounds, and industrial structures. In this seminar, students will analyze various aspects of modern society by approaching them through pioneering cases. Specifically, students will investigate apparently paradoxical yet simultaneously existing phenomena: fast consumption taking modern world by storm and its antagonist slow consumption; local movement of local production and consumption amidst globalization; heightening social awareness about consumptions including ethical and social consumption; perspective on physical consumption following media progress; family value conservatism and LGBT market expectations. Students will investigate these conditions and their antagonists to understand rapidly changing modern economic society. Through these, students will explore various intellectual interests and concerns. By learning current cultures and society characteristics, students will acquire ability to compose new cultural values.
