【Course Objectives】

To study fieldwork methodology and practice

【Course Contents】

This is an action-oriented class in which students learn about the ideals and realities of a multiculturally convivial society through practical fieldwork with people who are often positioned as social minorities, such as refugees and asylum seekers, children, persons with disabilities, and women. Before going out into the field, students learn about the differences in border control methods, gender perspectives, and educational perspectives in Japan and other countries through literature and audiovisual materials. Then, students will prepare for the fieldwork based on how to request a survey, the positonality of the researcher, and group work methods.
Additionally, a guest speaker will be invited to the class to conduct interviews. We will examine how we need to take action on pressing social issues to realize a sustainable society in which no one is left behind.
In class, students are expected to listen to the narratives of not only their research collaborators but also their classmates and actively exchange opinions.

*Please keep in mind that the date of the fieldwork will be adjusted in the first class.
*If you will be absent from class, please contact the instructor in advance.
