【Course Objectives】

Consider the relationship between craft and nature in multiple ways by focusing on case studies from rural areas in Europe, South America, and Japan.

【Course Contents】

Craft and handmaking are embedded in a web of social relationships involving human and non-human actors. Through case studies from Europe, South America, and Japan, we will learn about the modern history and current predicament of crafts and consider their relationship with the environment from multiple perspectives. Furthermore, we will explore how rural communities around the world are rethinking crafts to face issues of depopulation, environmental degradation, and the decline of traditional industries by taking advantage of local and global interconnections. From these perspectives, we will have the opportunity to discuss the place and future of craft in a post-industrial society.
