This class takes up topics on cities and communities. Those who take the class absorb academic knowledge on urban sociology and geography through reading books and materials related to these realms. Furthermore, students have to choose a theme, carry out field research, and prepare to write a report based on the research.

5. Preliminary field research
Students have to decide themes based on own interests and feasibility.

本演習は、履修者が都市／地域を自ら選び、そこにある具体的な場所を歴史的・社会的・地理的に書くことを目指すゼミである。ゼミ活動を通じ、履修者は都市社会学・地理学を中心に、都市研究に関わる学術的知識を身に付け、自ら適切なテーマや調査地を選択し、フィールドワークや調査研究を進める。また、これに基づいた報告書（ゼミ論文）の執筆準備を行なう。

①都市社会学・地理学に関わる理論的文献の講読、②グローバリゼーションと日本を含む各国における都市、地域、人間の活動に関する文献の講読、③現場の観察やインタビューに基づくフィールドワークの方法の復習と学習、④調査テーマの検討・決定と調査項目の精緻化、⑤プレ・フィールド調査の実施
ゲストスピーカーを呼ぶ可能性もある。
