【Course Objectives】

People’s thoughts construct a society, where events regenerate further new thoughts for re-constructing the society. Almost 35 years have passed since the spawn of the sustainable development concept. Now, it has been widely disseminated through a global policy framework, “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”. In this course, the students will learn about how the concept of sustainable development has evolved based on the thoughts, debates and problems over development and environment in a highly political context and the relevant policies that were produced. The course will look at the flow of 'event -> thinking/responses -> thoughts -> concepts -> policies' to deepen the understanding of how multi-stakeholders can co-learn and collaborate to overcome tensions and solve complex sustainability challenges. The course will examine the meaning of 'neutrality' which is unavoidable in the discursive and collaboration process by the multistakeholder in a local community.

【Course Contents】

The course will take the participatory and co-learning approach that will provide a student with the opportunity to speak out and think together with others. Workshop-style discussion time will be allocated as in-class activities. This course will also invite two or three guest speakers. This course has the following four objectives:
- Basic knowledge about the background of sustainable development concepts and SDGs and the trends and issues of relevant international and domestic policies and practices.
- In-depth understanding of the linkage between sustainable development/SDGs and our everyday life.
- Capacity to identify the sustainability challenges in everyday life, analyse the root causes and impacts and skills to work together for solutions with diverse stakeholders with respect.
- Ability to have his/her answer to the question of what sustainable development means, drawing on the issues in a local community and through collaboration with others.
