Students will learn basic methods to collect materials and read documents. After that, they will learn how to write simple, clean, and easy to understand essays. This skill will be useful in the business world too. In total students will write about 10 essays.
Mass media essays, represented by news articles, are practical essays (explanatory essays) that convey information to readers in easy to understand manner. These differ completely from essays and short theses students had written from elementary through high schools. In general, students will refrain from showing opinions, emotions, and thoughts in their words. How can students construct their explanations of event timelines, people introductions, and current events, to convey them accurately to readers? Students will improve their practical writing skill by writing about each subject.

実用文を書く上で、事前の取材方法をや資料の読み込み方の基本を押さえたうえで、ビジネスの世界でも通用する、平易で簡潔、そしてわかりやすい文章の書き方を身に着けます。全部で約10本の原稿を書いてもらいます。

新聞記事に代表されるマスメディアの文章は、読み手に分かりやすく情報を伝達する実用文（説明文）の一種です。みなさんが小中学校、高校で学んできた作文や小論文とはまったく異なり、書き手の感想や心情、考えを字面には出さないことを基本にしています。
物事の発生経緯や人物紹介、時事ワードの解説などはどのように構成すれば情報を的確に読者に説明できるのか。テーマごとに実際に書いてみることによって実践的な筆力を向上させます。

課題作文の執筆（８００字）講義の冒頭に最近の新聞記事を紹介、そのニュース性や背景を説明。受講者も新聞やテレビでニュースを読んだり見たりしながら、なぜそれがニュースになっているのか、その１週間でなぜ一番印象に残ったのか、を考えておいてください。世の中の出来事をウォッチもしないでメディアを語ることはできません。自分なりの視点、感想をまとめることで、説明文作成のトレーニングにもなります。政治・経済から社会問題、スポーツ、芸能まで分野を問いません。
