Whenever "documentaries" are mentioned, many people may think about "objective" and "neutral" journalistic works such as "NHK Special". However, there are many approaches and philosophies in "documentaries". Each director has different way to face the world. In this lecture, students will focus on various methodologies of documentary film directors and observe their diversity, richness, and potential.
The professor Kazuhiro Soda do not use script before making a film, and also do not use narration and music. With these "Observational Film" methodologies and styles, he continues making documentary films. If methodology is "cause", then work is its "result". In this lecture, students will watch as many global documentaries as possible. They will analyze connections among their methodologies and works from directors’ perspectives. This lecture emphasizes interactivity and participation in discussions. Students should be aware of spontaneous pauses (rests) during lectures depending on film lengths. Professor may change these films without first notifying students.

「ドキュメンタリー」というと、すぐさまNHKスペシャルなどの「客観・中立」を掲げたジャーナリスティックな作品を思い浮かべる人が多いかもしれない。しかしドキュメンタリー界には実に多様なアプローチや哲学があり、作家それぞれの「世界との向き合い方」がある。本講義では、ドキュメンタリー映画作家たちの様々な方法論に着目し、その多様性と豊かさと可能性を概観する。

講師を務める想田和弘は、事前に台本を作らずナレーションや音楽を使わぬ「観察映画」の方法論とスタイルで、ドキュメンタリー映画を作り続けてきた作家である。方法論を「原因」とするならば、作品は「結果」である。本講義では、世界で作られてきた多様なドキュメンタリー映画をできるだけ数多く鑑賞し、その方法論と作品との関係を作家の視点で分析する。講義は可能な限りインタラクティブに行い、議論への参加を重視する。上映作品の長さに合わせて、臨機応変に講義の区切り（休憩）を設けることに留意されたい。上映作品は予告なしに変更されることがある。

| 5 | 映画の始まりは「ドキュメンタリー」だった。世界で初めて撮られた映画として知られる、リュミエール兄弟による短編数本を鑑賞し、議論する。 |
| 6 | ドキュメンタリー映画の父と呼ばれるロバート・フラハティ監督「極北のナヌーク」（アメリカ、78分、1922年）を鑑賞し、ドキュメンタリーとは何か、フィクションとの境目とは何か、について考える。 |
| 7 | 大きく捉えれば「極北のナヌーク」の系譜に連なる文化人類学的ドキュメンタリー映画「リヴァイアサン」（アメリカ・フランス・イギリス、87分、2012年、ルーシァン・キャステーヌ＝テイラー、ヴェレナ・パラヴェル監督）を鑑賞し、カメラ機材の発達とドキュメンタリー・スタイルの関係等について議論。 |
| 8 | アーカイブ・ドキュメンタリー映画「国葬」（オランダ・リトアニア、135分、2019年、セルゲイ・ロズニツァ監督）を鑑賞。 |
| 9 | 「国葬」を題材に、ドキュメンタリーにおける編集の力について考え、議論する。 |
| 10 | アニメーション・ドキュメンタリー映画「戦場でワルツを」（イスラエル、90分、2008年、アリ・フォルマン監督）を鑑賞。映像作品における虚と実の合間について考察し、議論する。 |
| 11 | 「ディア・ピョンヤン」（2005年、日本・韓国、107分、ヤン・ヨンヒ監督）を鑑賞。私生活にカメラを向けることで開けるドキュメンタリーの可能性について考える。 |
| 12 | 映画「ゆきゆきて、神軍」（1987年、122分、原一男監督）を鑑賞。 |
| 13 | 映画「ゆきゆきて、神軍について議論。「アクション・ドキュメンタリー」を標榜する原一男は、対象に積極的に働きかけて「共犯関係」を作り出し、これまで口を閉ざしてきた元兵士の証言をほじくり出した。武器としてのカメラが提示する諸問題について考察する。 |
