【Course Objectives】

The goals of this course are as follows:

(1)To deeply understand academic literature in Media Sociology, and to acquire the ability to apply this understanding.
(2)To learn how to compare and consider opposing information on specific topics or issues, and to develop the ability to build an integrated understanding.
(3)To refine and express opinions about media and society based on specialized knowledge.

【Course Contents】

While the internet provides a foundation for social collaboration, it also facilitates the spread of fake news and hate speech, thereby promoting human rights violations and societal division. Consequently, there are increasing demands for intervention in speech and expression activities directed at corporations like the former Twitter Inc., and governments. We must not only adapt to changes in the media environment but also anticipate its impacts and implement necessary rules.

In this course, we will first learn about the characteristics of communication on social media and theories related to freedom of speech and expression. Then, we will engage in group discussions about the rules concerning freedom of speech and expression. The ultimate goal is for each student to develop a well-informed and universal opinion. Furthermore, through reading sessions, students will enhance their ability to read academic literature accurately. During group work exercises, they will acquire fundamental skills necessary for future research and learning, such as methods of discussion.
