【Course Objectives】

As represented by the term "Masugomi," distrust towards media and journalism has been on the rise. Daily exposure to news has mostly shifted to the internet. In such circumstances, we may be losing our interest in the senders of journalism. Regardless of the emergence of new platforms, journalists and reporters have always been the ones digging news. The objectives of this seminar are twofold: 1) to comprehend the spaces and routines in which media senders operate, and 2) to acquire the fundamentals of discourse analysis focused on journalism and media.

【Course Contents】

The content of this seminar serves as the foundation for composing graduation theses focusing on the senders of journalism and media. 1) reviewing previous research on senders of journalism in Japan and the United States, 2) highlighting the characteristics of Japanese newspapers and newspaper journalists, and 3) utilizing sources and methodologies for discourse analysis targeting journalists and newsrooms. While the emphasis may vary according to participants' interests, there is a strong likelihood of delving extensively into aspect 3).
