Students will deepen their understanding about publishing media by studying publishing industry’s condition, history, development, and book editing bureau. In this class, students will seek to enrich their cultural knowledge by learning more about publishing, meaning of reading experience, and environment surrounding books.
Students will learn about publishing industry, including publishing process, editing task, book making method, logistics, sales, new and antiquarian bookstore, and library. Professor will show multi-faceted aspects of the communities consisted of authors, editors, publishers, publishing industries, and readers. In addition, professor will explain about modern history of Japanese and European publishing media. In this class, students will focus on connections between publishing and society.

出版産業の実態、その歴史的歩みと展開、書籍編集の現場などを知ることにより、出版メディアについて理解を深める。本をとりまく環境と読書経験の意味を掘り下げ、出版をとおして各自の文化認識をよりゆたかなものにすることを授業の目標とします。

出版の実務や編集作業、書籍のつくりかた、流通と販売の実際、書店や古書店、図書館など、出版をめぐる世界を紹介し、考察していきます。著者、編集者、出版人、出版業界、読者などが創り上げる書物のコミュニティを多面的に例示します。また、近代以降の日本およびヨーロッパの出版メディアについて、歴史的に解説します。出版と社会との関わりを軸に講義を進めます。

当然ながら日頃読書に親しみ、出版をめぐる全世界、書物や雑誌、活字や印刷、ブックデザインなどに強い関心と興味をもち、書店や図書館に足繁く通っていることが授業の前提となります。出版産業の世界に対する理解を深めていただくことが講義の目標ですので、とにかく本に対する関心を強め、問題意識をもって取り組んでください。
