【Course Objectives】

The goal of this social research seminar is to equip students with the tools to use social survey and statistical survey analysis methods. They will learn and practice conducting statistical survey analyses and writing report theses based on these analysis results.

【Course Contents】

It is recognized that in cities, such as Tokyo, there are urban styles of personality and life that are unfettered by conventional or traditional values, and those cultural and behavioral phenomena are accounted for by factors such as the weakening of interpersonal ties and the development of subcultures. For example, city residents are more prone to hold equal gender role attitudes and tolerance towards immigrants, and likely to believe that marriage and childbearing are an option and not a requirement in life. But we might ask 'what is a city?' or 'are there any differences between urban and rural residents in urbanized countries today?'
The goal of this course is to learn the theories and concepts of urban sociology, and its application to social research to examine whether there are any characteristic features of young people living in cities. Specifically, students will learn and practice through the following processes.
・Determine survey subjects ・Establish questions ・Establish hypotheses ・Create survey sheets ・Extract samples
・Distribute survey sheets ・Collect survey sheets ・Input data (editing, coding, and cleaning)
・Aggregate and analyze data ・Write reports
