In this class, we will learn how to read and write poems with close attention to the properties of English that are often overlooked in traditional language classes, such as rhythm and figurative language. By the end of the semester, students will come away with a broader understanding of English, not just as a tool for communication but as a means of self-expression.
Students will read poems, and then write their own poems based on prompts suggested by the assigned poems. Each writing assignment is followed by a workshop, where students will comment on each other's work.
