【Course Objectives】

Through the examination of the history of the Japanese empire, this course aims to provide students a general timeline and framework to understand modern Japanese and East Asian history and analytical tools to think about empires and their legacies.

【Course Contents】

This course examines the formation and workings of the Japanese colonial empire, from its establishment in 1895 to its demise in 1945. We will look at the empire's history from various perspectives including institutions, policies, and people both colonizing and colonized.
