To understand Japan's relation with Asia, mostly with modern Korea, in the modern era.
The course will examine critical periods in Japan's relations with primarily Korea, but also the other Northeast Asian countries where appropriate. Some of the themes of the class will be modernization, colonization, Korean liberation movements, and the post-Pacific War, post-liberation periods (post-1945) of the countries and peoples involved.
