【Course Objectives】

This course introduces students to contemporary discussions about migration, gender and care work in the globalized world. It also examines the structural gender inequality between the global North and global South in the context of the increasing care crisis facing the demographic changes related to greater longevity. Migrant labor force is increasingly demanded to satisfy caregiving for the elderly, along with other care services for children, disabled persons and other situations of vulnerability. At the end of the course, students are expected to develop critical and constructive reflections concerning migrant care workers’ human rights.

【Course Contents】

The course is divided into four parts. The first part introduces migration studies from a gender perspective in the context of a global care crisis. Then, we will discuss the historical, social and demographic background of care work as well as its sociological and political debates (for instance, gender, race and regional inequality). In the third part, we present regional overviews of migration conditions and care work, with an emphasis on Filipino women's migration into Canada, Europe and Japan. Lastly, we will discuss the trajectories of care workers based on empirical and qualitative research. A discussion about ethical, social and political challenges will be held as a way of final consideration.
