The main objective of this course is to raise awareness among students about various issues that emerge from global political, economic and social trends and affect local communities. and to encourage them to think about such problems from different viewpoints.
Another objective is to, through the study of important terms from various fields, such as political science and economics, and brief debates, enable students to improve their ability to discuss political, economic, cultural and environmental issues.
While looking at how accelerated globalization has affected communities around the world, we shall examine the relationship between global conditions and changes on one hand, and various problems faced by local communities (such as political and military conflict, poverty, social and economic disparity, or environmental destruction) on the other.

本コースの主な目的は、世界的な規模の政治的・経済的・文化的動向の中で生じる諸問題、及びそれらの動きがローカルコミュニティへ与える影響に関する意識を高めることである。また、グローバル化による諸問題を様々な側面から考える能力を身に付けることも、本コースの目標の一つである。さらに、政治学や経済学など、様々な分野の専門用語を学び、短い討論を行うことで（政治や経済、文化などに関する）コミュニケーション能力の向上を目指す。

グローバル化が世界中のローカルコミュニティにもたらした影響に焦点を当てながら、世界的な政治的・経済的状況と、紛争・貧困・社会的経済的格差・環境破壊などのようなローカルコミュニティが直面する問題の間の関係を探る。
While looking at how accelerated globalization has affected communities around the world, we shall examine the relationship between global conditions and changes on one hand, and various problems faced by local communities (such as political and military conflict, poverty, social and economic disparity, or environmental destruction) on the other.
| 1 | Course introduction During this class the students will be informed about the goals and contents of the course, as well as about the grading criteria and expected attitude in the class. |
| 2 | What are global society, globalization and local communities? Here, we shall examine the concept of global society, definitions of globalization and some main approaches to studying the effects of globalization on countries and local communities. |
| 3 | How global political changes and relations affect local communities I Here we shall examine how global changes in political systems, political trends and power relations affect individual countries and local communities in them by focusing on the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of communism in Europe and elsewhere. |
| 4 | How global political changes and relations affect local communities II During this class we will turn our attention to the issues of interethnic conflict, ethnic cleansing and refuge crises while focusing on the civil war in former Yugoslavia, which followed the collapse of communism in that country. |
| 5 | How global political changes and relations affect local communities III In this class we shall address the issue of large-scale migrations caused by political instability and persecution and how they affect local communities in the countries which receive large numbers of immigrants. |
| 6 | Globalization, religion and local communities I In this class we shall address the issue of the relationship between globalization and religion on a theoretical level. |
| 7 | Globalization, religion and local communities II Here, by focusing on the case of Muslim communities in France and the relationship between traditional Muslim religious values and modern French secular values, we shall examine how global trends such as increased migration and mixing of different cultures affect the life in local communities. |
| 8 | Guidance regarding the term-end paper During this class, students will be given information regarding the format of the term-end paper and grading criteria. Instructions will also be given regarding how to write a persuasive, objective paper. |
| 9 | Globalization and Economy I In this lecture, while also introducing the economic and social benefits of globalization, we shall theoretically discuss economic problems in local communities brought about by globalization, global markets and the pursuit of profit, such as the income gap, poor working conditions, etc. |
| 10 | Globalization and Economy II Here, by focusing on the case of Bangladesh, we shall talk about the problem of poor working conditions and the exploitation of workers as a consequence of the global integration of markets and supply chains. |
| 11 | Globalization and Economy III In this class we shall take up the issue of child labor in Africa and examine how it is related to global trends in technology and economy. |
| 12 | Globalization and Environmental Destruction I Here we shall broadly examine how the global demand for resources affects the natural environment and how environmental destruction affects human health. |
| 13 | Globalization and Environmental Destruction II In this class, while focusing on the case of the gold rush in Peru, we will examine the consequences of environmental destruction brought about by economic globalization on local communities in the Amazon region. |
| 14 | Course summary Here, we shall look back at the entire course and think about the relationship between global and local issues. |
