【Course Objectives】

(1)To attain the basic knowledge about the modern history of Burma (Myanmar) based on the two keywords "violence" and "non-violence".
(2)To attain the ability to consider objectively the rightness of "violence" and "non-violence" respectively as a means for the political solution of conflicts through looking into specific examples in the modern history of Burma (Myanmar)
(3)To understand profoundly about Aung San Suu Kyi's discussions on "non-violence".
(4)To understand the basic features of Rohingya problems together with the possibility for peaceful solution.

【Course Contents】

The class consists of five main topics. The first is to look into their different understandings of "violence" between F. Fanon and M. K. Gandhi. The second is to think carefully about the conflicts occurred during the British colonial period in Burma (Myanmar), which were based on the questions related to "races", "religions" and "ideologies". The third is to consider the matters of military rules after independence especially after 1962 when the state army seized the political power by coup. The fourth is to discuss the matter about Aung San Suu Kyi's way of understanding "non-violence". Last is to look into the serious situation of Rohingyas (the huge refugees in Bangladesh who escaped from Burma/Myanmar because of the violent attack by the state army). It deals with their conflicts of historical understandings between the Rohingyas and the majority of Burmese (Myanmar) people.
