【Course Objectives】

In this class, students will aim to achieve the following:
(1) Understand what kind of language English is, its characteristics and its position in the world, and to be able to explain its position in Japanese society from a historical perspective.
(2) Understand how human cognition, emotion, and behaviour are related to language acquisition and apply this understanding to their English learning and English education in Japan.
(3) Deepen consideration of teaching materials and assessment in English education, understand various teaching methods based on theoretical backgrounds, and propose specific teaching methods.

【Course Contents】

This course will examine English language learning and education in Japan by providing an overview of language characteristics, cultural and historical backgrounds, educational policies, theories of second language acquisition, foreign language teaching methods, and teaching materials, instruction, and evaluation in junior high and high schools. Through group activities, students will take the initiative to examine and deepen their understanding of various topics and questions related to English pedagogy. Students will acquire the fundamentals and theories of English pedagogy and put them into practice.
