【Course Objectives】

The objectives of this course are: (1) to gain fundamental knowledge of nation/nationalism, race, and ethnicity, and (2) to critically analyze and apply this knowledge within the context of Japanese society.

【Course Contents】

The notions of “Japan” and “Japanese” may appear so ingrained that many students might not have questioned them. Prevailing opinions, such as “Japan is a homogeneous country” or “Racism is an issue elsewhere,” persist in Japanese society. This course critically challenges these assumptions by delving into concepts and instances related to nationalism, race, and ethnicity. While these concepts might be unfamiliar, understanding them is essential for examining Japanese society. The course will explore their definitions, similarities and differences, historical perspectives, and various approaches. We will also investigate how these concepts manifest in contemporary society, particularly within Japanese society. The course encompasses lectures, discussions, comment sheets, and student presentations, encouraging active participation.
