Through this course, students will (1) get familiar with key terminologies, concepts, theories, and debates in the field of bilingualism, (2) acquire an understanding of bilingualism as an individual and societal phenomenon, and (3) develop the ability to discuss and write their opinions clearly and effectively.
While nearly two-thirds of the world’s population is bilingual to some degree, the monolingual is still often seen as normal in Japan, and the bilingual as a rarity. This course aims to develop students’ understanding of bilingualism as an individual and societal phenomenon by looking at various crucial issues and controversies (e.g., bilingual development, language loss, language choice, bilingualism and cognition, and language education) in the field.

本コースを通して達成することが期待される目標は以下の通りである：
(1) バイリンガリズム研究で用いられる基本的な用語、概念、理論を理解することができる。
(2) バイリンガリズムについて、個人および社会のレベルで理解することができる。
(3) 本コースで扱う様々なトピックについて、自身の意見を批判的かつ効果的に論じたり、書いたりすることができる。

今日、世界人口の約2/3はバイリンガルであると言われているが、日本では未だモノリンガルが一般的であると考えられることが多い。本コースでは、多様なトピック（バイリンガルの言語能力の発達と喪失、言語の選択、認知と思考、言語教育など）を通して、バイリンガリズムとは何か共に考え学んでいく。
