【Course Objectives】

In this class, you will learn the history of the "Shimpa" theater genre that was born in the Meiji period, and deepen your understanding of one aspect of Japanese theater history. In addition, by tracing the formation, establishment, and development of "Shimpa", we will consider what ``newness'' means for theater, and examine various aspects of "Shimpa" elements in contemporary culture.

【Course Contents】

During the Meiji period, a theater genre called "Shimpa" emerged with the aim of creating an artistic style that was complementary to existing Kabuki, but also different from it. Emerging theater, which originated from the political trends of the Freedom and People's Rights Movement, sought to move away from politics and seek artistry, forming a new genre. "Shimpa" was created, established, and developed in connection with the popular culture and customs of each era, and the concept of "Shimpa" spread through its relationship with adjacent fields such as literature, art, and film. In this class, we will consider a wide range of contemporary social issues through a historical examination of the ``Shinpa'' theater genre.
